REVIEW Con't: The "JD Cann Debacle" Debacle

We will be discussing sections of the same video covered in the Feb. 22, 2024 entry titled "REVIEW..."

Link to video here; relevant timestamps will once again be provided.

First things first, I would like to thank Dana (@DanaDooDah on Twitter, rottingjewels on YouTube) very much for single-handedly promoting this blog. She has a full plate of her own so I appreciate the time out she takes to offer support and encouragement.

Special thanks goes to The People Vs. David Berkowitz website for hosting so many important documents related to the case. I do not know the people behind this endeavor but I would love to meet them.

And of course I appreciate all of you for taking an interest and watching me untangle and clean up the mess Manny leaves behind.

Part 4

Jumping right in, I do think it's important to analyze the information and commentary provided by Manny Grossman because while he states on his Twitter bio that he is the "Worlds premiere expert on the Son of Sam crimes," there appears to be no real quality control on his show, as we will soon see.

Mr. Grossman says himself, "research requires responsibility" (14:28). I agree, hence this project.

Around the 36:47 mark, Manny begins to go over a witness statement believed by himself and Maury Terry to describe the actions of one JD or James D. Cann immediately following the arrest of David Berkowitz.

However, we have this comment posted by Manny after the video aired to consider:

See, this also makes it bad for Manny, the world's premier expert on the Son of Sam crimes.

An "expert" offering "PhD level" analysis surely would have recognized that the police report being dissected and analyzed does not contain the name Cann; regardless, Manny used this witness statement to draw unsupported conclusions about Mr. Cann - the very thing he accused Maury Terry of doing with the same police report

This makes the entire "debacle" all the more amusing.

Part 5

Now let's take a look at what the report says as well as how Manny interprets it. The files can be found here on pages 37 and 38, but I will produce the main body of the statement below:

At the 41:13 mark, Manny states, "we're getting nothing in here - and this is the only police report that exists on this guy - we're getting nothing in here that he was related to the cult."

If you are reading the same report that I am, ask yourself why would Mr. Weiland offer that James was in a cult when it was never revealed to him (as far as we can tell)?

Generally speaking, if you have no need to know that someone is involved or affiliated with a criminal organization, they are not going to tell you.

This police report is not a deep dive or a detailed biography on this "James" person. Mr. Weiland knew the subject briefly, they worked together, James acted strange, brought a knife to work and asked for a "firearm type weapon".

Manny would like for this report to be Maury's single source for all he knew about JD Cann but that is merely an assumption on Manny's part.

Part 6

What are we to make of Manny editorializing that this "James" person suffers from schizophrenia (39:55, and again at 41:31)? Does Manny have access to "James's" medical records? I ask because from reading this report, the guy sounds like he was genuinely scared that some unknown persons were out to get him and he would handle the situation with deadly force if necessary. That does not make one schizophrenic.

Manny also believes himself to have some insight into the minds of the viewers! Or at least the ones he refers to as "Maurons".

(40:26) "Now I know what you're saying,  'he spoke to Berkowitz, that means he's guilty...'"

Manny frequently makes use of strawmen; rather than stick to the facts or direct quotes, he likes to offer up these fantasy scenarios where the "Maurons" are saying and doing this or that. If there is one thing Manny specializes in, it's assumptions based on what he would love for them to be doing and saying.

Part 7

At the 42:03 mark, Manny declares, "there was no yellow Volkswagon at Son of Sam" and later refers to the VW as a "red herring" (44:45).

This is incorrect.

The yellow VW was not an invention of Maury Terry's. Multiple witnesses spotted this vehicle around the time of the shooting. The police were concerned that the driver possibly saw, heard, or did something of interest related to the shooting. If the police did not follow up on this lead, they would not have been doing their jobs.

Below are excerpts from the Moskowitz/Violante file located at The People Vs. David Berkowitz site.

I didn't write the police reports. Maury Terry did not write the police reports. The NYPD, whom Manny has praised in the past for their handling of the case, wrote those police reports.

Manny wants the yellow VW removed from the scene altogether. Why?

...

Okay, I think we've beat this episode to death but if you see or hear anything you would like for me to address, please let me know.

I suppose we could get into whether or not either "James" or JD Cann ever lived with his mother at 35 Pine. Frankly, it's not out of the question but without property or rental agreements we can't say for sure.

...

Next up we will have a very special edition featuring commentary from a very special reader.

Again, thank you all for being here. Please subscribe and share.
