I started to review the famous “Brooklyn Series” that Manny constantly references (this is coming soon) but a quick survey of Manny’s Twitter page tells me that I need to deal with the “Billy the Artist” debacle first and get it out of the way.
Manny seems exceptionally proud of this interview. In the video he’s giddy, he's laughin', he’s havin’ fun. Perhaps another victory lap is in order?
I can neither prove nor disprove that Manny was ever a “Terry Head” as he claims or that he has studied the case for 30 years. But if I’m sitting face to face with a man whose lies led me down a rabbit hole for that long…wouldn’t you be annoyed to find out a substantial portion of your life was wasted on a lie?
Instead Manny treats his guest like it was all in good fun, lying to Maury Terry for drug money, lying to Det. Murphy, wasting their time.
In fact, Manny appears thrilled that this person made a fool of Terry and Murphy. And him. And Sarah Wallace.
There is an interesting exchange starting at the 29:50 mark:
Manny: So now what’s your impression of Maury Terry? Did you, like, tell me, tell, tell the audience what, like, what was your honest impression?
“Billy”: At the time I thought he was on the up and up, I thought he was trying to fuckin’ unveil the truth behind the senseless killings, you know? [Note: “Billy” never discloses, specifically, what disabused him of this impression unless I missed it.]
Manny: But then why did you then lie to him?
“Billy”: I wanted money. I, I had a bad drug habit, I wanted to get high.
When I got the money, I gave my mom $300 to buy teeth, so if that counts for a- for anything…
Manny: That actually does count!
“Billy”: …I was a good son.
Manny: So Maury sold out the truth in this case for $[redacted]…
Sold out the truth?
Manny. I know you’re reading this. Do you ever listen to yourself? Do you see how you show your hand at moments like these?
But the gold, the pure GOLD, the pièce de résistance comes at the 32:17 mark.
"Billy": ...I did hang out at Untermyer with a bunch of people I did meet, um, Ken and uh,
Manny: No-no! [left hand hand comes into frame, finger extended, like he's correcting Maxi the Husky for jumping on a guest.]
I have a feeling the “Brooklyn Series” is going to be a blast.
