The "Grubby-Looking Hippie" Debacle

The video we will be looking at today, titled "Brooklyn-Part Five. Maury Terry's 'Grubby Hippie' Hoax...", can be found here.

Manny Grossman (22:15): "We have to actually deal first with this whole thing of the 'grubby hippie' because I'm saying it was a hoax...Robert Violante never even freaking said this in the first place, there was never a grubby hippie mentioned anywhere in the police reports..."

I have gone over all 363 pages of the Special Investigation File victim report concerning the Moskowitz/Violante attack, I have checked the Brooklyn D.A. reports, NYPD reports, various miscellaneous reports, and I can state with absolute certainty that Manny Grossman is correct - the words, "grubby hippie," appear nowhere in any of the police reports.

These words can definitely be found in The Ultimate Evil where they are attributed to Robert Violante, which is what has Manny all upset.

From page 68 of The Ultimate Evil, 1999 edition (page 71 in the 2021 version):

 Page 73 (76):

Page 89 (91):

This looks bad for Maury. That description is simply nowhere to be found in any police report whatsoever, yet he uses it over and over.

And then at the 52:06 mark, Manny makes a curious statement:

"Listen," Manny begins, "if anybody wants to go find that quote of Robert, Robert saying 'grubby-looking hippie' please do. If it's in a newspaper in 1979, well guess what, we're not going to accept it as real because the simple fact is what he said the night of is gonna be the most accurate."

1979 is an oddly specific year to mention, especially since we're looking at an incident which occurred in 1977.

But as it turns out that's exactly when Mr. Violante is reported to have made the observation.

Manny is gatekeeping. If he insists you're not allowed to use a source not personally authorized by himself or his guests, this is gatekeeping, plain and simple. It is not his place to tell anyone where they can and can not research the case.

Suddenly we're reminded of this old Tweet from Mr. Grossman:
