The Devistating "Oh Shit" Debacle

(The video in question titled, "The Grossman Files-Oh shit John Catalano Makes a Devastating Discovery" can be viewed here)

At approximately the 7:07 mark, Manny describes his guest, Mr. John Catalano, as one of the "premier Son of Sam researchers out there in history" and claims that no one knows this case more than Mr. Catalano. If this is true, this makes the omission of a key file relevant to this particular discussion all the more amusing.

As part of his presentation, Manny shows us a passage from the Ultimate Evil concerning the moment when John Carr learned of David Berkowitz's arrest. He, Mr. Carr, is said to have uttered, "oh shit," after receiving this news.

From page 118 of the 2021 edition of The Ultimate Evil (page 117 in the 1999 version):

Throughout the episode, Manny repeatedly referred to this passage as a lie.

Next, Manny and John produce an eye witness report from John Carr's ex-wife Dorothy Skipper.

I'll be honest, I have yet to track down the actual report itself but I'm happy to rely on the Manny's slideshow presentation starting at 19:00.

The important part comes near the end of the report, which has been transcribed by Manny.

Oh shit. This looks bad for Maury. This makes Maury look like a liar. John saw his parents house on television, became upset, but didn't say, "oh shit". He wasn't even in Minot!

Could it be that Maury got his information mixed up? We have a girlfriend over here, an ex-wife over there, friends in Denver, and John Carr was known to travel around the country quite a bit.

But let's take a closer look at what the document actually says:

John was visiting Dorothy Skipper in August. No specific day is given. The visit occurred some time after Berkowitz's arrest.

John Carr became upset when he saw his parents house on tv. He did not utter, "oh shit" at this moment but instead tried to contact his parents.

Please indulge me and click on this link. Scroll down the page to the interview of Linda O'Connor, it should be the 20th audio file.

[Please note: click the play button because selecting "Download Audio File" pulls up the Craig O'Connor interview instead.]

I recommend listening to the entire Linda O'Connor tape but the good stuff starts around the 4:20 mark:

"Linda was in the room when John learned of Berkowitz's arrest by a television news report. His only remark was, 'oh shit.'"

Oh shit.

So we have John in Minot learning of Berkowitz's arrest and later some time in August we have him in Texas getting upset when he sees his parents house on television. These are two separate incidents which occurred in two separate places and recounted by two separate people.

So no, Maury did not lie, he did not get his facts mixed up, he did not "mind steer" the reader.

Why didn't Maury include the Dorothy Skipper file in The Ultimate Evil? Well, it has little relevant information other than confirming they were married and she raised her and John's child in Texas.

Did Linda O'Connor lie? Why would she? What would she have to gain?

Why didn't Mr. Catalano, who is said to know the case better than anyone, present the Linda O'Connor tape for the viewers to consider?

...

I suppose that's enough for now but there are hours upon hours of footage to wade through full of omissions, half-truths, questionable sources and exaggerations on Manny's channel, so I can and will keep going in the weeks to come.

The important thing is that I've been working on this blog less than a week and I have recognized a pattern.

I do want to be clear: the purpose of this blog is not to defend Maury Terry so much as to correct a record that Mr. Grossman is trying to rewrite and dispose of.

Thanks again, everyone, I'll see you soon.
